  17. <p>23 are killed as Egyptian police stage raids against Muslim
  18. militants
  19. </p>
  20. <p>     The tourist city of Aswan was already tense following the
  21. murder of two policemen. Then, acting on a tip that
  22. antigovernment militants were secretly assembling, security
  23. forces surrounded the city's al-Rahman Mosque. Gunfire suddenly
  24. pierced the night and continued for hours. When it was over, 14
  25. had been killed, including a policeman. Eight coordinated raids
  26. in the Cairo area and one north of the capital produced more
  27. shoot-outs and more casualties: a total of 23 dead and 46
  28. injured, the highest toll since the assassination of Anwar Sadat
  29. in 1981.

  31. <p>     Coincidentally, 49 Muslim militants who have been charged
  32. with attacks on foreign tourists--prime targets of late--went on trial in Cairo. Some proclaimed allegiance to Sheik
  33. Omar Abdel-Rahman, the antigovernment cleric self-exiled in the
  34. U.S. Ironically, Sheik Omar's sudden notoriety as a result of
  35. the World Trade Center bombing in New York City may have helped
  36. provide President Hosni Mubarak with an excuse to order last
  37. week's bloody crackdown.
